The Shroud of Turin:  May 2010 Visit

Pictures and Video from Our Recent Visit on May 6, 2010

Marie and I visited the Shroud of Turin on May 6, in Turin Italy.  There were literally thousands of people in line, but the viewing was well organized.  It took us only about 1.5 hrs in line before we were standing in front of this most famous cloth of all time.

Standing in line.  There were thousands in line each day to view the Shroud of Turin for only a brief few minutes.  People came from all over the world.

As we got closer, there were several paintings posted of what artists thought Jesus might have looked like.  It was apparent many of these were probably based on the Shroud image.

Here we are closer still.  Just before viewing the Shroud, a video was shown recapping its characteristics and history.

When we were up close, we only had a few minutes to view this most wonderful of artifacts.  No flash photography was allowed, but low-light video was permitted.  I took this video...

Recapping Evidence for the Shroud

There has been much controversy about the famous Shroud of Turin.  I doubt that anyone could argue that it is a most remarkable cloth - there is nothing like it anywhere.

When viewing the Shroud in person, this is what one sees:

The SHroud of Turin - Burial Cloth of Jesus?

The image on the Shroud is a "negative" imprint of a Man, full frontal and dorsal sides.

When one gazes at this image on the Shroud of Turin, there is no mistaking that it is the image of a beaten, tortured, crucified Man:

  • Mature in age, about 6' 2"" in height
  • With shoulder length hair, a beard, a moustache and a ponytail
  • Who has undergone a great deal of physical injury...

There is evidence of blood marks and punctures about the head
A cheek appears to be swollen
The image shows evidence of a wound at the side
The entire figure, both frontal and dorsal sides, shows evidence of scourging
Nail wounds are apparent in the wrists

Results of recent research are nothing less than astounding.

The image on the Shroud was not painted on or artificially produced

It is in fact a faint "negative" image of a man, only clearly discernable when a photograph is taken to produce a "positive" image of the negative (see below)

The wounds depicted on the Shroud match very closely with the sufferings of Jesus as documented in the Bible

Facial and head wounds show evidence of beating, as well as pointed objects about the crown of the head.

Hand and arm wounds reveal pierced wrists, and evidence of crucifixion

The legs of the man were not broken.

There are over 100 scourge marks on the man's front and back.

There is a large chest wound.

Shoulder Injuries show evidence of scraping against a heavy rough object.

Foot wounds are the result of piercing.

Actual human blood is present on the Shroud

Pollen on the Shroud traces its origin to Palestine

The size of the Shroud reflects the standard unit of measurement of the time of Jesus

The recent "carbon 14 dating" exercise has shown to be  a sham - see this link for more information on this topic.

The view is breath taking and the evidence is overwhelming - this may indeed the burial cloth of Jesus.
